Warhammer 40k Daemonhunters and Daemonhunter Strategy
Daemonhunters General TacticsIf the Space Marines ethos is "Quality is better that Quantity", then the Daemonhunters and particularly the Grey Knights take this to extremes. As the weapons of the Grey Knights favour assaults (Storm Bolters & Nemesis force weapons), you will want to be on the move and into assault as soon as possible. There is hole in the Daemon hunters armoury as there are not that many tank busting weapons available. You may want to co-opt some standard Marines or Guard squads to fill this void. Daemonhunters HQ TacticsDaemonhunters have a choice of two HQ's. If you are taking only one HQ, be careful which HQ you choose as it affects which squad options you are allowed. Be careful if you are taking two HQ choices that you do not spend too many points on them. If you over spend on your HQ you will be overwhelmed by your opponents troop numbers. Ordo Malleus Inquisitor LordGrey Knight HeroThe Grey Knight Hero is a Space Marine with psychic powers and terminator armour. Grey Knight Heroes come in two types, a Grand Master, and a less powerful Brother-Captain. As always, I advise against spending too many points on over powerful HQ models. Daemonhunters Elite TacticsOrdo Malleus InquisitorDaemonhostsGrey Knight TerminatorsDeath-Cult AssassinsOfficio Assassinorum OperativeOfficio Assassinorum Operative, ( a.k.a. Imperial Assassins ) have been a favourite of generals for a long time.
Daemonhunters Troop TacticsGrey KnightsGrey Knights are the Daemonhunters Space Marines. At 25 points each they are 10 points more than the normal Space Marines. This means that you will have fewer troops than most of your enemies. Inquisitorial StormtroopersImperial Stormtroopers are a good way to to beef up your army with a quantity of troops. As you may expect, they are not are powerful as standard space marines, but the don't have to be either. Stormtroopers are best deployed as body guards to your expensive Grey Knights and elite troops. Special WeaponsStormtroopers can take up to two special weapons. As most of these weapons are close support firearms you will need to get close to your enemy, but not in close combat. Allied Space MarinesOne way of building a Daemonhunters army quickly, and to have add cheaper more flexible troops is to add Space Marines as allies. You can not use allies to fill any compulsory choice slots, so you will need to have two squads of Inquisitorial Storm Troopers available. Remember that you can not take Space Marines as Allies if you have any Grey Knights in the army. Space Marine Tactical SquadsSpace Marine Scout SquadsYou can have up to one Space Marine Scout Squad as an allied squad. Allied Imperial GuardAnother, and more flexible option for allies is to add Imperial Guard Units. The advantage of adding guard units is that they can be used when you have Grey Knights in your army, and they are allot cheaper at 6 points each for a basic guardsman. This allows you to create a cheaper shield of troops than taking Storm Trooper can. Daemonhunters Fast Attack TacticsGrey KnightsYou can have Gray Knights as Fast Attack squads. Doing this allows you more slots to fill with Marines, and you can teleport them on to tyhe table like Terminators. The down side is that they can not take a transport option. This means that when they have landed, they can only move at foot speed ( 6"/5cm) + assault. On larger tables this may be an issue to the point where you may want to take a Land Raider as a Heavy Support choice to ferry them around. Daemonhunters Heavy SupportGrey Knights Purgation SquadOrbital StrikeOrbital Strikes are a way of adding Heavy Support to your army without buying more models.
